Before You Came Along is a website where friends and family write down memories of someone they love. That person gets a few a day, each one illustrated, as a gift. The person who sets it up is the organizer.
What we collect
- When you sign in with Google or Microsoft: your name and email address.
- From the organizer: the names and email addresses of the people they invite, and photos of people in the campaign. The organizer can also add a phone number to a person. The site sends no text messages.
- From the people who write: their moments, photos, voice recordings, and who else is in each moment.
- From the person the gift is for: a push notification subscription, if they turn notifications on.
- How the site is used: page views, counted by Vercel Web Analytics, and a record of steps such as "wrote a moment". That record holds no moment text, names or email addresses.
Who can see a moment
- The person who wrote it.
- The organizer of that campaign, who sees every moment in it.
- The person the gift is for, and anyone they give their link to, once the moment is delivered.
- People named in a delivered moment, if the organizer turns that on, unless the writer marked it only for the person the gift is for.
- Anyone, without signing in, if the site owner stars it as an example. A starred moment shows on beforeyoucamealong.com/examples, on the home page, and on the landing page of every campaign. It shows the moment, its picture, any recording, the writer's name, and the first name of the person it was for. Only moments from the site owner's own campaigns can be starred. A moment the writer marked only for the person the gift is for can't be starred.
Who handles your information for us
- Anthropic (Claude) reads moment text to plan each picture and to ask follow-up questions, and looks at photos of people to describe how they look.
- Google (Gemini) draws the pictures from moment text and photos, and (Veo) turns a picture into a short animation when someone asks.
- Luma and Runway, which the site owner uses to test animations.
- Resend sends the site's emails.
- Supabase stores the database and handles sign-in.
- Vercel hosts the site, stores photos, recordings and pictures, and counts page views.
We don't sell personal information.
Cookies
One keeps you signed in. Opening an invite link sets a second one that holds the invite for an hour.
Push notifications
The person the gift is for may opt in to receive push notifications on their device when a new moment is available. Notifications can be turned off at any time in the device's notification settings, or by removing the app from the home screen.
Deleting
You can delete your own moment until it is delivered. You can remove the photos and recordings you added at any time. The organizer can delete any moment in their campaign. The organizer can also remove a person, which deletes that person's photos and portrait and keeps their moments under the name they wrote. To delete a delivered moment you wrote, write to hello@beforeyoucamealong.com.
